Entrepreneurial Spirit

I recently read a couple of books which do a pretty good job of explaining what it is like to go out on your own as an entrepreneur, and how you need to change your thinking to be successful on your own. Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” differentiates between the thinking / outlook of an employee and an entrepreneur. Todd’s “Risk & Grow Rich” is an unabashed pep talk for pursuing the American dream. Todd credits Kiyosaki as one of her inspirations for setting out on her own. You won’t find a formula to follow in Kiyosaki’s book - it is more a Zen-like approach - change your thinking and success and happiness will follow. There is a formula in Todd’s book for Real Estate investment success, but I wouldn’t advise you to follow it; the book was published in 2006 at what appears in hindsight to be a peak in a very bullish runup in RE prices; the formula set out in the book can give you quick profits in a runup but you are highly leveraged so you are very vulnerable to a downturn. What Todd’s book really gives you is an appreciation for all the hard work, organization and self-discipline that goes into being a success.
