Death By Blogging
Apr 7th, 2008 by Dave
The NY Times had a somewhat alarmist story about two bloggers dying from heart attacks and a third surviving a heart attack; just since December; so of course I had to post about it…The two Korean gamers that died in 2005 come to mind. How is it they find themselves on a tech treadmill they can’t get off? The warning signs should have been there, at least for the bloggers, weeks or months in advance - sleep disruptions; no time for other activities and personal time. Don’t they realize the beast is insatiable? You would think that at some point they would realize it wasn’t worth it and go on to some other line of work. All the money they’re making isn’t much good to them if they’re dead. Technology was supposed to work for us, not against us. Maybe you’re not a blogger but are spending way too much time on your crackberry or surfing the web. Would the world end if you only checked email once or twice a day? You too may be on the technology treadmill. If you are, read Timothy Ferriss’ book “The 4-Hour Workweek” and you’ll get some tips for taming the beast. Ferriss was working 15 hour days and coming home exhausted; his breakthrough was when he came across the work of Vilfredo Pareto and the 80/20 rule; applied it to his business where a small percentage of his customers made up the vast majority of his profits - and rearranged his schedule to focus on those customers and was able to cut way back on the hours he was working.
